Four of the groups from Room 2 and The Pirates decided to present their research as Keynotes which have now been put into movies for the blog.

Here’s the first video…enjoy!

Following on from the research we did, each group presented their work as either a poster, an online poster (a Glog) or a Keynote (otherwise known as a Powerpoint). Over the next few days I’ll be putting the children’s work up for all to see.

All the children did a great job.

Enjoy the presentations and feel free to leave us a comment.

To raise money in support of Child’s Dream, the students at Harston Primary had a crazy hair day. Each student who participated donated a gold coin.

As we held the crazy hair day on a Wednesday, some of our playgroupers joined in to.

Have a look at some of our creations.

Chris and Liz left us this cool video this morning to help us answer our question: How would you have to adapt if you cycled around the world?

It can get quite windy though – check out what happened to their tent on this day. They weren’t even able to leave it for quite some time!

Chris and Liz have posted us some questions to answer.

Get your thinking caps on and start calculating!

image

Chris and Liz are cycling through the gobi desert on bicycles. They carry a tent to sleep in, food and water. They have to carry lots of food and water because there are not many shops in the desert. Each day they need water for cooking drinking and washing.

image

They use the following;
3 cups – porridge (breakfast).
2 cups – water for noodles (lunch).
4 cups – water for rice (dinner).
8 cups – tea, hot chocolate, coffee.
2 cups – washing up.
3 litres – drinking water.

1 cup = 250 ml
1000ml = 1 litre

image

Question
How many litres of water do Liz and Chris need for one day?

Chris and Liz have to carry all the water on their bicycles. To carry the water they have several containers.

image

3 x 4 litre bladders
1 x 10 litre water bladder
4 x 500ml water bottles
2 x 1.5 liter water bottles
1 x 750ml water bottle
2 x 1.5 liter backpacks
1 x 1 liter thermos flask

image

Questions
How many liters of water can they carry in total?

How many days will this water last them for?

Extra thinking
How much does all the weigh?

Why isn’t there much water in the gobi desert?

Could Chris and Liz drink water from a tap, river or lake if they found one?

What would happen if they did not drink enough water?

Do you think you could cycle with your water, food, house and clothes on your bike?

If you think you could where would you go?

Today was a very exciting day for our inquiry.

We are learning about adaptation and currently have two big questions that we are trying to research the answers to.

1) What is life like in South East Asia and how would you have to adapt to live there?
2) How would we have to adapt if we cycled around the world?

Chris (Miss. Leakey’s brother) and his fiance Liz are cycling from New Zealand back to England to raise money for the charity Child’s Dream who we are also supporting as part of our inquiry. This is what the project Connecting Children: Brightening Futures is all about.

Today we got to skype with Chris and Liz who are all the way over in MONGOLIA!

Each group got to ask a question about the cycling trip or about South East Asia (where Chris and Liz have worked and cycled through parts of). We will be using their answers to help us with the presentation of our research.

Here is a map of the route they are taking to get from NZ to England.

Map of our route

Here is a map with flags on NZ and Mongolia so you can see how far away we were from Chris and Liz.

View Skyping with Chris and Liz in a larger map

Here are a few statistics about their trip so far:
09/06/2011: Ulaanbatar, Mongolia
Distance so far: 11,660km/7,245miles
Number of days away: 651
Number of days cycling: 229
Number of punctures: 29
Longest day: 114 (Liz) 122km (Chris)

We look forward to sharing our research with the world soon!

As part of our inquiry into life in South East Asia, we have been looking at different sources of information and how these can help us with our research. One of the sources that we thought would be useful was the internet.

The problem is, the internet has A LOT of information so we are using this google search site which only looks at a few websites. This will help us practise the skills we need to start researching.

You can use the link below to help you with your own research. Let us know if you find out anything interesting.

Before we started our research on the countries that Child’s Dream supports (Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and Laos) we shared our ideas about what we thought we knew about South East Asia. We had to explain why we thought this.
Look at some of our ideas below.

Can you add any more ideas to our Wallwisher?

If you know that we are right or wrong about anything, we would love to hear your ideas – please leave us a comment.
